Nathan says: “In summer, the sun rises to a peak of around 60 degrees; that’s four times higher than in mid-winter. So, how does this affect the hair? There is less light reflected, so hair appears duller. Other major factors include the dehydrating effects of summer mixed with the effects of central heating.
“The environmental effects from the summer also affect the hair’s surface, often roughening the cuticle layer. This also leads to less light reflection, creating a dull look and feel.”
As you know, hair-needs change seasonally. You need to help clients establish a good care routine going into Autumn. Nathan says: “I’d prescribe an initial in-salon treatment with Metal Detox from L’Oréal Professionnel. This will remove any metallic deposits from the summer that could make the hair look dull. Then use a shine-intensifying acidic colour such as L’Oréal Professionnel Dia Light. This can replace some of the depth lost over the summer.” Nathan Walker
Nathan’s top tips for darker hair this Autumn
- Nathan says: “The gentlest way to enhance shine in darker hair is to use a colour that enhances this, such as L’Oréal Professionnel Dia Richesse. This contains softening waxes to smooth the roughness of the cuticle and enhance the shine.
- “Recommend an Autumn haircare regime. Winter hair needs are primarily hydration and protection from the constant change of cold damp conditions outside to warm, dry conditions inside.
- “As temperatures cool, ensure darker tones are warm, with plenty of depth and high gloss. All-over block colours are popular right now, but don’t be afraid to add panels of darker tones for contrast and interest.” Nathan Walker
Thanks to Nathan for sharing these tips. Hopefully, this has given you some ideas for keeping colour clients fresh even as we go into the colder months.
