Darrel Starkey talks up reds

Red is still the go-to option for clients wanting warmth and vibrancy in the Winter months. They’re asking for reds, coppers, and every shade in between. All open to interpretation, and we love seeing how you add your own twists and turns to different clients, ensuring this trend suits the individual… Here’s one we like from Darrel Starkey and his team:

The perfect red for right now

Darrel and his team including Nicola Hamm and Mia Rowley worked together to deliver this eye-catching look. Enjoy the notes and photographs supplied:

The model presented with bands of colour in her hair throughout, making it a colour correction process.

Client consultation is a key part of any colour service and it’s vital to assess the hair and discuss the plan in depth. Darrel reminds you to ensure you coincide on the vision for the look!

To be confident the colour develops in the way you want, sectioning is key. In this process, the hair was split into four sections: section into a middle parting, then work on the left-hand section dividing it into two, braiding a smaller section towards the nape of the back. With the second, right-hand section, braid a large section and section in line with the top of the ear.

The team used System Blonde 9 Levels Lightener and 3% and the colour was applied freely, in order to really work into the hair follicles.

A pre-pigment spray was applied to the hair. Darrel advises pre-pigmenting on the lighter panels as it allows you to achieve a much darker and richer colour which will also last a lot longer. The team used ASP Pre Pigment Orange Spray to even-out hair.

Roots 5.66 + 6.117 equal parts with convertor were applied. On mid-lengths and ends Bred Red + 6% and for copper panels Bred Copper + 3%. Darrel says begin your colour placement and apply the colour this way: With your separated front left section, go with the lighter colour, then the remaining sections use global application and work into the hair as much as possible. Separate the two applications using foil or clear sheeting.

When drying, always use a heat defender spray, especially when creating vivid colours. Focus on the front fringe section and use a large medium-sized barrel brush to achieve a voluminous bang. When drying the rest of the hair, remember texture is key for the look, so feel free to be creative. Work in a few soft curls throughout the mid-sections to add something a little more unique.
