Velvet is back

We see a big wave of trends for velvet cropping up in clothing and accessories…and now, clients want to mimic this trend on their hair!

Suzie McGil at Rainbow Room international is totally on board…

“My favourite luxe velvet hair colours for the season are chestnut brunette and cherry red. These shades are so fitting for the season and have a beautiful warmth to them that adds an instant glow to the complexion. More unique shades like navy blue also work well and can give the hair a beautiful, rich pigmentation that really makes a statement.”

When it comes to creating velvet inspired hair looks in the salon, using the right colour service is obviously key.

Start with glossing; a perfect service to give a client’s hair richness and an intense shine. It can be a particularly good service for your brunettes or those with bolder red hair shades such as cherry reds. The service enhances the base shade fantastically and allows it to look healthy and vibrant.

How about highlights, another useful service to achieve that luxe velvet hair.. Clients with a block blonde or copper shade might favour this treatment… By adding subtle, thin highlights that don’t have that ‘streaky affect’ it will give the hair movement and a beautiful shimmer, like you would see on velvet clothing.

Suzie advises that the most crucial part to client’s upkeep of velvet colour is aftercare.

So here’s what your clients should be doing:

  1. Use at home hair masks and treatments to keep the colour looking as bright and glossy as possible
  2. Include hair oils to give the hair added hydration and a luxe look and feel, whilst also keeping the colour vivid and long-lasting
  3. Recreate a professional blowdry to achieve hair with a smooth finish and glass like shine

By doing this, your client’s can achieve the full potential of the velvet look.
