We can pretty much guarantee that the priority for most of your clients over the age of 35 is for their greys to be covered. Grey hair is usually associated with looking older which is why colouring the hair can instantly make someone look and feel younger. Giving your clients the best and most natural coverage possible will no doubt be high up on your priority list too, so that they can leave the salon feeling at their absolute best.
Work those greys
Let’s go back to basics on grey hair, with a little help from Matrix Artist Ambassador Carole Richie. “As we get older the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die,” she explains. “With fewer pigment cells in the hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become more transparent like a grey, silver or white. How early we go grey is determined by our genes, so this means most of us will start around the same age as our parents or grandparents first did.”
Need to know:
Here are Carole’s tips for covering greys using Matrix: • Get a single process colour service. As long as you keep up with the regrowth on a regular basis this is the obvious choice
• If your client isn’t majorly grey then go for a highlight or lowlight which can also make the grey less noticeable.
• Matrix Extra Coverage is totally intermixable with all of the SoColor collections with the exception of the ultra blondes, so this extends the colour palette immensely.
• Opt for a permanent root blanket coverage. Using the 500 series in Matrix is perfect for this, as long as the hair is 50% grey and over. It will completely banish the grey with its double pigment technology. Then in between visits clients can use the temporary root touch up kit to cover up.
• Using highlights/lowlights gives you that multi-tonal look which helps to blend in the grey giving you more of a natural finish.
Case study in grey
Hairdresser Sharon Peake at Ethos Hairdressing worked with client Amy to ward off that grey look for a wee bit longer. Amy is in her late 30s and wanted to full cover her natural roots so they opted for the full coverage range.
Here’s what Sharon used: Formula A: 25 prts SoColor Extra Coverage 505N & 15 prts SoColor Extra Coverage 506Nw with 40 prts 20 Vol Matrix Developer.
Tah dah! So now you have a bit more know how, you can get to it!
