Noir Et Blanc: from the cutting room floor

Sam Bell’s Noir Et Blanc collection celebrates iconic hair references throughout the decades. The images are shot in black and white and celebrate classic silhouettes and techniques. These are juxtaposed with unexpected colour placement and texture for a more contemporary feel.

When a monochrome collection has just as much to offer in colour, it’s a shame not to bring those extra details to life. Although Sam originally planned the below image for a black and white shot, she fell in love with it in colour.

Sam says, ‘I’d decided to shoot this collection using just black and blonde hair but then on set, I was having a little play with the new updated colours from Aveda. I created a zig-zag effect on a blonde weft using multiple tones of blue, then added a finger wave to try to mimic the movement of water. It turned out so well I decided to use it in the collection, knowing it would be shot in black and white and therefore provide contrast, rather than colour. However, when we saw this look on the screen, I knew I had to include it somewhere as I just loved how beautifully the blue popped against everything – the blonde hair, the outfit and the background – it’s so impactful. The punch of colour feels powerful but elegant, particularly teamed with the waved finish and the model’s pale complexion.’
