Sarah Spiers is a colour expert with decades of hands-on experience, blending a passion for colour with a clear, science-based approach. She has worked with top UK salons, including Trevor Sorbie and Brooks & Brooks, and began exploring colour deeply in the 1980s, driven by creativity and experimentation.
Her fascination with what she calls the “Science of Hair” stems from a desire to understand the ‘why’ behind colouring techniques – an outlook shaped by her grandfather, a carpenter who taught her the value of structure and purpose. Frustrated by the lack of colour theory education, Sarah founded Chaulk Education to empower stylists with clarity, confidence, and control.

No brands, just colour
Chaulk offers brand-neutral training, helping stylists adapt across products and techniques without being limited by specific brands. By maintaining a brand-neutral stance, she tackles a common challenge in the industry: stylists often switch products and brands when they move to a new salon. Sarah’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that “Colour is colour.” With the right knowledge and skill set, all stylists should be able to adapt easily to any product and brand they encounter, eliminating the worry and confusion that can come with switching brands.
Colour clarity and confidence
Known for her calm and clear approach, Sarah believes that colour work should be grounded in knowledge, particularly when it comes to more high-stakes services like colour corrections. To avoid “colour meltdowns,” Sarah emphasises that it’s not enough for stylists to simply hope a technique will work; they must understand the reasons behind it to ensure absolute certainty and clarity. This understanding is a key part of what she teaches at Chaulk: clarity, confidence, and craftsmanship in professional colour services.
