Jessica Rabbit’s signature red hair is a staple of classic Hollywood glamour. To recreate this look, Kelly combines red and pink tones melted seamlessly into a vibrant ruby red base, with an added touch of purple at low points for added shadow and richness.
The Technique
To achieve this dimensional melt, follow these steps:
1. Base Color: Begin by melting a permanent vivid red from the root, blending downward into a classic freehand application using lightener and tint. This creates a foundation of light and shade within the hair. Ensure full saturation for effective lift, aiming to expose the underlying red-orange pigment that sets the stage for the final color.
2. Rinse and Balance: Once the tint has fully developed and the lightener has exposed the desired tone, thoroughly rinse. Apply a porosity equaliser to balance the hair, then towel dry.
3. Creative Melt: Layer a full head creative melt using a blend of vivid tones:
– Ruby reds for depth
– Shocking pinks for vibrancy and pop
– Hints of purple to build dimension and shadow
4. Sectioning: Work in diagonal sections during both the freehand and melting phases to prevent visible striping and ensure a seamless blend.
5. Placement: Keep depth concentrated in the interior and place lighter, vibrant tones around the perimeter to create ultimate contrast and luminosity.
