We’re constantly in touch with our Colour Titans and Colour World Genius winners – the expert friends we’ve made for Colour World. Constantly evolving and exploring the world of colour, these educators and amazing colourists are so inspirational. Here we have notes from Lloyd Court, Creative Director at Sean Hanna on how to take control wtih the Silk Bath technique.

This is an ancient technique where artisans dye raw silk. It’s been viral on TikTok recently and is a great way to create multi-dimensional results while staying in control of how they develop. Take it away Lloyd:
Lloyd Court shares
“A silk bath is a technique where diluted versions of direct dyes are layered onto pre-lightened hair at the backwash basin, allowing colour to build up gradually like fabric taking on pigment. It’s not a new technique but it gives colourists an opportunity to experiment with contrasting and imaginative tones.”

Here are Lloyd’s top five insights into mastering the technique and why it is such an effective way to create beautiful, multi-tonal colour.
1 Take complete control of how colour develops
One of the biggest concerns colourists have when working with direct dyes is not knowing exactly how the colour will develop. The beauty of the silk bath technique is that it allows you to see the transformation happening in front of you. The key feature of a silk bath is the ability to layer the colours and watch them develop as you work. Rather than applying a single, solid shade and waiting for the final result, silk baths allow you to build tone gradually. This gives you greater control and means you can adjust the colour as you go, adding more depth, softness or vibrancy where needed.
2 Start with a clean canvas
Before applying a silk bath, it’s essential to understand the condition, porosity and existing tone of the hair. Take time to assess whether you need to neutralise unwanted tones, add warmth, create more depth or simply refresh what is already there. For vibrant colours like purple or pink, I always start with a clean bleach base. This gives you the clarity and brightness needed for the colour to really shine.
3 Choose tones that complement, not compete
Rather than chasing one flat shade, the silk bath method enables colourists to think about how different tones can work together to create movement and dimension. I love using complementary tones that melt together, but you can also use the technique to add a pop of colour to the ends. With the silk bath technique you are always in full control and able to let your creativity run wild, while remaining confident about the outcome.
4 Create dimension by working through the lengths
To create this beautiful multi-tonal shade, I used the silk bath technique to first apply colour to the ends of the hair, I then spread the hair out on either side of the basin and bathe it in the diluted colour. This method allows the colour to move through the hair in a softer, more blended way, creating subtle variations in tone rather than a uniform finish.
5 Use the basin to control root application
The silk bath technique is not only effective for refreshing lengths, it can also be used to create softer, blended root areas. When applying colour to the roots using the silk bath method, I use a cup to apply the diluted colour from the basin to the roots. This allows for a controlled application, helping the colour transition naturally from the root through to the lengths. It’s a great way to create softer finishes and avoid harsh lines.
Thanks Lloyd
