Loving this collection shared with us by Darrel Starkey, which is the result of his Mentorship programme. His course is for anyone wanting to break into hair photography. It’s about taking a creative idea, and bringing it to reality with the help of someone with industry experience themself. Darrel is one of the most enthusiastic and hard-working professionals who has put in the hours to learn his craft both in the salon and in the studio. Top tips from us – he’s likeable, easy to work with and super-supportive, too.

After joining up, a small group of students (think approx 8) join a series of Zoom calls with Darrel Starkey – salon owner, presenter and educator
Together they created mood boards and brainstormed ideas for a shoot,
Once the ideas are solid, the group moves on to planning a day working with a photographer, makeup artist, and stylist.
On shoot day, each of the students was allocated a four-hour slot to work with the shoot team. This was their opportunity to both express what they wanted, execute it and learn along the way.

Shaping the course this way, Darrel could offer the students a way to experience a professional photoshoot. But minimise the risk. The course pushes each student to think for themselves, but enjoy the advice and tuition of professionals. And of course, networking. Students make valuable connections with industry professionals, which could help them in their future careers.
Darrel says: “The Mentorship Shoot” is all about turning creative ideas into real, professional photoshoots. With help from industry experts and a dedicated team, students not only brought their visions to life but also learned a ton about the process, making them better prepared in the world of hair photography.
