Hair shedding is one of those concerns that crops up time and time again in the salon chair. It doesn’t discriminate and can affect clients at different life stages for different reasons. That’s why creating a safe space to talk about hair loss matters.
Experts at L’Oréal Professionnel are digging into the science behind seasonal shedding and thinning, sharing insights into why it happens and how professionals can support their clients through it.
What’s hair shedding?
.. and why doe sth time of year matter? Abigail Butler, Artistic Educator at L’Oréal Professionnel describes seasonal hair shedding, also known as seasonal hair loss, as a temporary increase in hair fall during specific times of the year. It’s a recognised phenomenon, often linked to environmental changes such as temperature, sunlight exposure, and even dietary patterns. Hair shedding tends to peak in spring and autumn.
It’s interesting how changes in daylight duration impacts hormonal regulation within the body, which in turn can impact the hair growth cycle. The transition from summer into autumn involves more than a shift in scenery and crisp air, fluctuations in temperature and daylight can influence the body and, in turn, hair behaviour.
Telltale signs to look out for
Clients may notice more hair on their brush, in the shower, or a general reduction in hair density. Rachel Valentine, L’Oréal Professionnel Trichologist, explains that the difference between permanent thinning, seasonal shedding is more diffuse across the entire scalp, so distinct bald patches won’t be perceptible.
How can we identify if a client is experiencing seasonal hair loss?
Texture is the early clue. Rachel that in summer, hair tends to be drier or more damaged due to UV exposure. In winter, the scalp can be more sensitive because of temperature changes, frequent hat use, exposing between cold weather and heather indoor spaces.
Her key advice for concerned clients? Don’t stop washing your hair. “Although it can be scary seeing the hair shedding in the shower, don’t avoid washing your hair. A clean scalp is imperative for healthy hair follicles, and hair growth and avoiding washing won’t stop the shedding”.
Tackling the issue

Supporting overall wellbeing is fundamental, so stick to giving your body enough nutrients and protein through a balanced diet, and pair with professional products developed for your necessities. Rachel suggests the L’Oréal Professionnel Serioxyl Advance range to treat this and help optimise hair cycles to lead to improved follicle renewal, to help support hair density over time.
She recommends implementing volumising products to see an immediate difference whilst the treatment ones do their work; she goes for L’Oréal Professionnel’s Volumen Extra Full Mousse at the roots before blow-drying to plump up the hair strands achieving a fuller hair look. Rachel also likes L’Oréal Professionnel’s Volume Panache Texture Spray to lock the volume in.
Seasonal hair shedding may be temporary, but the reassurance and guidance offered in the salon can have a lasting impact. With the right knowledge and the right tools, hair experts can help clients navigate hair changes without panic and with the right support in place.
