Exploring Vegan and Cruelty-Free colour: Why it matters

With so many professional colour brands on the market, choosing the right one for your salon can feel overwhelming. While reputation and performance remain essential, today’s salons are also weighing up another key factor: sustainability. Increasingly, clients and stylists alike are looking for colour that not only delivers exceptional results but also aligns with values of being vegan, cruelty-free, and enriched with more natural ingredients.

To dive deeper into this shift, we spoke with Eddie Renda, Managing Director at JGR UK Distributions Ltd, on behalf of MOOD, to explore the advantages of offering vegan and cruelty-free colour in the salon.

Advantages of Vegan and cruelty-free colour

Vegan and cruelty free product brands have been on the rise for some time and clients are now not only looking to find salons that stock vegan and cruelty free products for them to use at home for at home hair care maintenance, but they are also delving into researching salons who use vegan and cruelty free hair colour for their next hair colour appointment – particularly if this aligns with their values.

There are many advantages to salons offering vegan and cruelty free hair colour to their clients. Alongside catering to a new market of clientele including vegans and those who take sustainability seriously, a salon will reduce their carbon footprint. Using eco-friendly hair products in general contributes to a more sustainable salon operation, reduced wastage and minimising environmental impact by avoiding animal testing and harmful chemicals. Vegan and cruelty free hair colour not containing any harmful chemicals also allows for clients to have cleaner, safer products used on their hair that are not as harsh or damaging.

At MOOD, we pride ourselves on providing clients with hair colour that provides vibrant and intense hair colour results to clients, whether they are looking for 100% grey coverage, a natural shade that enhances their natural base shade, hilift blonde or a vivid bright or fashion colour that stands out from the crowd. Our hair colour is formulated with natural ingredients which align with our sustainability ethos. Our natural ingredients promote hair and scalp health, offer environmentally friendly formulas, and provide benefits like antioxidant protection, nourishment, and colour longevity.

Some natural ingredients we have within the MOOD colour line include Cranberry Extract, which is naturally rich in Vitamin C and Tannins, has an anti-oxidant action, fights free radicals and helps prolong the duration of the colour and Quinoa extract, which protects, repairs and gives shine to the hair and helps to counteract the natural retention of colour. Created with a cream base, our colour cream hair products have been formulated to facilitate the absorption of colour molecules thus intensifying the result on the hair.

Natural ingredients within hair colour not only provide essential benefits to client’s hair but also help to deliver a beautiful aroma for clients and heighten the client experience in the salon. As a signifcant amount of hair colour formulas contain ammonia (which has a strong smell), including natural ingredients with beautiful scents is a good way to balance this out whilst adding in additional nourishment to the hair. At MOOD our hair colour has a low ammonia content to minimise irritation and damage whilst still providing beautifully rich shades and colour longetivity.

As we all know, bleaching can be irritating on the scalp, providing some clients with mild tingling to severe reactions/burns depending on their skin sensitivity. With this in consideration, at MOOD, we include ingredients such as Avo-Complex (a key active ingredient composed of natural sugar and avocado oil) within our Ultra Care Blonde Bleach, which works to protect and nourish the hair whilst being bleached and is more caring on the scalp. Bleaching can weaken the hair, therefore, having the additional hydrating, natural ingredients is also beneficial to add an extra protective layer on the hair and to help build strength and reduce breakage through the lightening process.

In conclusion, it’s crucial for colourists to carefully research and select the brands they use in the salon. Choosing the right products ensures you deliver the best possible service, helping clients leave happy, return regularly, and share positive word of mouth about their experience. As a colourist, your work is constantly on display – whether in the salon, on social media, in photoshoots, or on stage. Partnering with the right brand allows you to showcase your skills and creativity at the highest level, while consistently achieving outstanding results.
