Wow and crikey! There’s been a real shift in the dynamic of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2018 competition this year. Everyone from finalists to show teams have been upping their game and making the event this June of the best we can remember.

Keeping the competition at the heart of the event we’ll say from the outset, we applaud the truly magnificent line up of finalists for this year from around the UK and Ireland. The standard of work (including choice of model and clothes styling) was noticeably higher than ever. We perceived a much more brave approach to colour than we’ve seen before. The choices included bold, block colours, and patterning techniques, with fades and balayages on both long, short and in-between styles. The top three were clear winning looks from the opening parade. As a result we say bravo to Jamie Stevens, Charlie Miller and Trevor Sorbie taking third, second and first respectively. Lifting the trophy in a shower of confetti, Trevor’s girls were ecstatic. Judge Richard Ward declared that it had been a hotly debated decision and we can believe it, so heartfelt congrats to Charlie and Jamie’s crews, too.

Also presenting titles during the evening to other categories, host Reggie Yates called to the stage winner for the L’Oréal Professionnel STAR Award. Taylor Clayton at Paul Edmonds – and the Afro Look Award. Rick Roberts and the Mens Image – The Boutique Atelier. Smiles all round.
The shows
In conclusion, the shows at the L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2018 are always excellent, but again this year, surpassed expectation. United in the theme of ‘21stCentury Image’ we were also rapt to see three show teams make their time on stage as stunning as possible. Firstly, Percy & Reed delivered their take on The Moving Image – Dark/Light, conjuring up surreal visions of colour, texture and movement in exaggerated shapes that were as glorious as they were well executed. Ken Picton was challenged to showcase The Instant Image (great backing film Ken!). She focused on transition, but also filtering and altering techniques. Brooks & Brooks closed with The Editorial Image, a beautiful and thoughtful display of artisan styling which linked past and present, reminding us of how relevant it is to reference historical visions of beauty.
Roll on 2019… this is going to be one big night to beat!
