We’re not gonna minimise it, we did triple takes when first seeing the Pinstripe colour from Marlon Hawkins early last year. The artistic director at Brooks & Brooks is stunningly clever with his colour (learns from the best obvs). And knows how to turn heads. Now we’re talking about a Pinstripe trend that’s taking hold – and here’s Marlon to dish the tea on where it comes from and where it’s going!

Pinstripes by Marlon
To start off, take this note: Pinstripes have been a mainstay in fashion since the 19th century, and now the powerful, glamorous and versatile look is the latest trend for hair colour. Marlon tells us: “The Pinstripe trend is about seeing colour from a new perspective and exploring colour creativity. It’s simplistic with a playful meets edgy aesthetic.”
When it comes to colour, there is no right or wrong shade to use while working with this technique, which is perfect for longer layers. Marlon continues: “Colours that come from a contrasting palette will create a more graphic feel to the hair, while colours that complement each other create something softer, yet is still visual to the Pinstripe.

“The best technique is to start with a one length haircut – you can work on layered haircuts but to start with work on one length. Then take a fine veil of hair on top of the parting and make sure that the hair density stays the same throughout the lengths and ends. If the hair becomes fine, I will look at a second veil for the length and ends of the hair.”
“On the second veil I will only colour the tips, creating seamless bands using either the backcombing technique or air touch. Then I will colour the first veil as close as I want to go to the root. Once I have achieved my desired shade I wash and blow dry the hair and finish with a white comb and L’Oreal Professionnel Infinium from root to tip to showcase the Pinstripe colour.”

Marlon’s top tips
Here’s what you should consider when working the Pinstripe trend:
1 Think of your colour palette before you start
2 Do check the density of the hair is even throughout the lengths and ends to stop the pinstripe from becoming invisible.
3 Do mix your techniques from foiling to air touch to achieve seamless symmetry.
4 Don’t rush finding your placement.
5 Don’t overload the hair with hairspray , apply it in one single sweep.
6 When doing the comb technique use the teeth of the comb to hook in where your last line of your pinstripe was and then comb.
And there it is. You’re good to go with Pinstripes! Thanks Marlon.
