A leading hairstylist and colourist with a magic eye, we love Tom Smith’s tasteful take on all things fashion and consumer. So applause for Tom Smith Autumn Trends 2024!
Tom’s an international artist ‘in residence’ at Billi Currie in central London, and travels widely to work with big brands, significantly Olaplex. And he is international creative colour director at Evo. Quite a portfolio of roles that represent just how authentic his position as an expert in colour trends. And don’t forget, he scooped the title Colour World Colour Communicator 2024 in May, too. So he’s an adept explainer of all things colour!
The press often refer to Tom as a ‘The Hairvoyant’ – and seriously, there is something quite enchanting about his ability to see what’s coming way before we do! So, here we are leaning into the spell of Mr Smith and sharing what he’s just told us about upcoming trends for this Autumn – cut and colour wise.
AUTUMN UPCOMING
Tom tells us that as an overarching theme, think of the Autumn season as ushering in a time of shortening in hair lengths, and an intensity of colour tone returning. The themes of indulgence and richness that we’ve seen throughout this year sustain with a continued focus on hair health, and overall quality of shape and tone, he says. Autumn hair combines “cosiness and warmth with a regal, ethereal and vibrant energy.”
Key trends x 5
There are five easily understandable trends to watch for in colour according to Tom. Here they are distilled down for you:.
Terracopper: Always ‘on’ for Autumn, this year the copper to go for is inspired by the likes of singer Chappell Roan and You Tuber Kennedy Walsh.
Very earthy, reminiscent of Autumn leaves, and bolder than a naturally-occuring redhead. is can be achieved all over as a ‘global’ colour or can be done with a semi-permanent gloss on top of highlights or balayage.
Sunflower Blonde: Super intensely gold which makes hair look shinier and healthier is what we want to see! Blondes get such vibrancy and intensity without losing the blonde identity.
It’s extra-rich and glowy this upcoming season – but still very much a blonde. Take Sabrina Carpenter, Lindsay Lohan and Serena Williams as your range of inspo.
Flamingo Pink: Yes! Pink hair is brewing up for a moment back in the spotlight. Loud and pink says Tom, will be ‘in yer face’! It’s not for everyone – but for a bold vivid statement, it’s a winner.
More celebrities will be jumping in to this as the Autumn approaches… you can count on Kardashian or a Katy Perry pink revival surely?!!
Natural Greys: Selma Kayak showed off her natural grey this summer, but with a chic twist. The naturally lighter hair sat on top of a cool ombre balayage. Charlize Theron worked highlights around her grey keeping the lightness around the face. There are so many ways to lean into grey without losing control. Get to it this Autumn! It’s a thing.
Cinder Toffee Brunette: This colour is closer to a Sunflower Brunette than you’d expect. A true brunette, says Tom, but with a golden reflect.
A good way for people to play with being a brunette without going completely over to the dark side! Think of Kamala Harris, the current Khloe Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Sofia Vergara.
