Ceri Cushen

The BIG question: Ceri Cushen
London-based Ceri Cushen is the manager and colour director at award-winning Metropolis Hairdressing in the London borough of Kingston upon Thames. We asked her,  what is her vision for colour client services in 2018?
“As a busy colourist, the key words when it comes to client care are education and trust. An educated client is a loyal client – and when your client trusts you, they remain loyal.
“Hair colour has never been so popular with clients of all ages as it is right now. In the last few years, we have seen a huge influx of clients colouring their hair and with the increasing amount of social media terminology  – from blorange to balayage, tortoise shell to ecaille, ombré, somber and bronde – they can become easily confused !
“As colourists, it is our responsibility to educate our clients on what suits them and what is realistically achievable; a client must have options but maintaining hair condition is a must, as well as an understanding of good aftercare.
“When clients follow a recommended aftercare regime at home, their colour has more longevity and this helps sustain the relationship of trust, loyalty and repeat custom.
“At Metropolis this Autumn we are all about the ‘underlay’. Our new underlay technique is when the top section of the hair from the crown is sectioned off & left in the base colour  & Panels of lighter shades are added in directional slices which cascade down around the face and from behind the ear.
“This gives the perfect illusion of health and shine for the winter months and can be worn discreetly it enhanced with a loose upto or wearing the hair waved off the face .
“This technique is perfect to give the top layers of hair a break from colouring after its exposure to the sun over summer and let’s the hair gain strength through the winter months with the colour focus coming from beneath this section maintenance is also minimal. Colour trends for AW will be honey, sand, caramel & biscuit blondes with the brunette making a big comeback with chocolate rich browns sliced with cafe au lait coloured slices.
