Lea Shaw: Building Bonds

Client relationships are everything to a hairdresser – your job is about building bonds! Of course you can take that literally, in getting hair to ultimate healthy condition, and beautifully coloured, too. And equally in building a great bond with your client that grows loyalty and trust.  Salon owner of Rural Fringe, and platform artist – colourist extraordinaire we say – Lea Shaw has a great perspective on this…

” Hairdressers are there to chat to their client, as much or as little as the client desires. This creates a relationship built on understanding. Some clients have a stylist that could trust with their life. Others have stylists that they see solely for doing their hair.

“As hairdressers, we’re able to read social cues as if they were in another language. We just want you to feel as relaxed as possible. We offer a tranquil environment in which they can relax and let us do the work.

“At Rural Fringe, we encourage our staff to be themselves. This often means that clients are able to find the right personality match for them and build a more personal stylist and client relationship. Our relaxed approach is what keeps client’s coming back.

“In the salon, we often have all the stylists and clients in one conversation! This creates a relaxed atmosphere between everyone. Also it takes the pressure off clients who aren’t as comfortable chatting one on one.

“But we do offer quiet appointments and private appointments for clients with sensitive issues or religious reasons. You need to understand how much of a difference this can be for clients who find the salon to be quite daunting.

Building bonds

“”Building good client relationships is at the forefront of my salon’s vision. For us, it’s all about the little things. Whether it’s a birthday message, a recommendation for what to watch on Netflix, or a personal call. WhatsApp is widely used by the team and our clients which gives us an informal chatting option. This is our number one tool to keep clients engaged and build a more personal client relationship. Whilst engaging with clients on social media is another great way to build client relationships, but we find that it’s not as personal.

“Our customer experience is the foundation of our business. We continually ensure that our clients receive the highest standard of service. Building a loyal client base encourages word-of-mouth referrals and satisfied customers will leave positive reviews online so building good relationship will massively benefit your business.

Final words

“Being a part of your client’s hair journey is a fantastic part of the job – you have the ability to transform their confidence and make them look and feel their best. When you bring their hair dreams to life, it’s an amazing moment that you can share between the two of you – and, it’s so rewarding!”

THANKS so much Lea. Lots in there which is common sense and probably many of you are doing it instinctively. But putting it into words to read is helpful to remind, and inspire best bond-building behaviour!
